O! for Ootoya - Part 1
On Thursday we had no finals, so Book and I went to J-Avenue at Soi Thonglor to study for out math final. There was much traffic near Book's house, so while waiting for her, I went grocery (more like junk-food) shopping at Villa Supermarket and bought some Chocolate Chip Teddy Grahams (I just had a few handful of those things this morning), some Japanese candy, and strawberry juice, which claims to have 35% of your daily calcium requirements per one 220 mL...do I believe it? I don't know...it's really unbelievable...and your mom always told you never to believe everything you read (well, she didn't really but...)
We spent a few hours study at Mousses-Berries (a fusion of the cake store Mousses&Meringues and the ubiquitous ice-cream store i-berry) where Book had a horlicks ice-cream and I had a shake. Book had never eaten Teddy Grahams before, so I opened the box and we shared some. I also found some 'siamese teddies'!

When we got hungry, we went upstairs to the Ootoya, a Japanese restaurant where, according to Book, has the best tonkatsu. The original Ootoya is in Japan, and some Thai person bought the franchise. Well, the head cook is still Japanese, so I guess that explaisn why the food is really good. Most of the Bento sets average at about 200 baht, which is really cheap considering you're served a huge bowl of (real) Japanese rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables, an accompaniment-of-the-day, and the HUGE main dish. When I went with Book on Thursday, she had Tonkatsu while I had a chicken/tofu/egg stew of some sort.
I love eggs and tofu (hence I could potentially be a vegetarian), and anything that matches them together I always order. There was also carrots and chicken in this. The only catch was that the chicken still had skin on and I don't like to eat the skin of ANYTHING. The taste, well, the first sip I took of the thick broth was that it was rather salty, but then this sweet taste started to settle in. It wasn't sugar sweet, which is 'spikey' in my opinion, but was..how do you say it? 'Harmonious'? Like it was naturally in the broth (the vegetables and the egg, probably). Yeah, it was good, and I finished it to the last drop. The rice was real Japanese rice, short and round (Fuji, Zen, and other 'Japanese' chain restaurants serve you Thai rice, essentially). As a testament to how good the rice was, I finished half the bowl. If you know me, and I tell you I ate more than 2 spoons of rice, then you know that the rice must either be 1) brown, whole-grain rice, or 2) really good white Japanese rice.
So I had a good time with Ootoya. After lunch we went to au bon pain, studied some more, then went home. I fantasized about Ootoya all the way home, hoping that the one at Emporium will open very soon...but then, of course, unexpected things always happen!
(Will be continued in Part 2, which is when I come home today after tutoring and karate ^^)

Back!
Whoa..
It's been a while. I guess for a long moment there I got fed up with how my picture weren't uploading so I stopped blogging. I guess I should start again now, especially since vacation is coming up, everybody's coming back, and there's gonna be a lot of eating.
Recently nothing much has happened. No 'exotic' food experiences yet - but there's a Sri Lankan Food Festival at Novotel Siam Square at the beginning of next month, so I made plans with Ginger to go eat. Then, of course, when everyone (Candice, Tony, etc) comes back, there's going to be a lot of adventures!
So here are some pictures...let's hope they load...
OK! Phew..it did after a long while. So here's me and Candice, who came back to visit early November, in front of Vanilla Industry. What I'm holding is NOT ice cream, but a cutesy set of bath fizz that she got me...downside: I ain't go not bathtub!
"Ice Lime Pie" and "Banoffee Pie" ... you can't have a complete Vanilla Industry experience without these two, well, at least you HAVE TO HAVE the Ice Lime Pie. While eating this, Candice and I thought about how Tony and Natta once fought over the lime. Idiots...^__^;;

Book's birthday was on November 14th, so we (Book, me, and Bee) had dinner at Coffee Beans. This is the picture of the three cakes we ate. The one in front is mine, "Apple Pie" (so fine, it was two cakes and one pie). Going clockwise, Book's was the "Snow White Cake" (I think that was it - it was essentially a soft, moist, not-too-sweet white chocolate cake). Bee's was the "Toblerone Cheesecake". Many people swear by this cake, but I don't. I don't feel the cheesiness in the cheesecake or the toblerone-ness -- it's more like sweetened cream to me!
BETTER PICTURES & ENTRIES NEXT TIME! Tonight I'm just so tired...
